Intel's Q1 2025: Beat, But Bearish Outlook Sends Stock Tumbling

Intel's Q1 2025 earnings beat EPS estimates, but a weak Q2 outlook and tariff concerns sent the stock plummeting. The company is implementing cost-cutting measures under new leadership.

Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) released its Q1 2025 earnings report, revealing a mixed bag of results. While the company beat EPS estimates at $0.13, surpassing the expected $0.00, a disappointing Q2 outlook triggered a significant stock drop. Revenue remained flat year-over-year at $12.7 billion, aligning with forecasts, but the projected Q2 revenue of $11.8 billion fell short of the $12.82 billion analyst consensus.

The report highlighted both strengths and weaknesses. Intel's AI PC segment and foundry businesses demonstrated high-single-digit growth. However, the Client Computing Group (CCG) saw a 38% revenue decline, and the Data Center and AI (DCAI) group experienced a 39% drop. New CEO Lip-Bu Tan is implementing aggressive cost-cutting measures, including workforce reductions and spending cuts, to address these challenges.

Intel's stock reacted negatively to the weak Q2 guidance and concerns about potential tariff impacts. Shares plunged in after-hours trading and continued their descent the following day. Analysts have expressed mixed opinions, with some lowering price targets due to near-term uncertainties. Investors are now closely watching Intel's progress on its foundry strategy, AI initiatives, and potential divestitures. The next earnings report in July will be a crucial indicator of the company's recovery trajectory.

The semiconductor giant faces stiff competition, especially in the AI chip market dominated by Nvidia, and continued macroeconomic headwinds. Despite the Q1 EPS beat, the overall sentiment surrounding Intel remains cautiously pessimistic as it navigates a challenging period of transition.
